Direct and indirect lighting

direct lighting

The different lighting modes

A lighting mode is characterized by more or less direct contact, without obstacle between the object to be illuminated and the light source.

Direct lighting

This lighting model is obtained when the light directly illuminates, without encountering obstacles, the object or the room to be illuminated.

Advantages:

Direct lighting makes it possible to illuminate in a precise and targeted way a given place. It is also the most efficient lighting with the least loss of light. Direct lighting is preferred over dining tables, reading areas, offices or any other workspace.

Warning:

To avoid any inconvenience or discomfort, care must be taken that the light sources do not point directly to people's eyes.

LED spots and downlights offer beautiful direct light sources.

Indirect lighting

This lighting model is obtained when the light source is oriented towards a reflecting surface or through a light diffuser such as a shade. The light scattered in the room does not reach directly from the light source. The reflective surface or the light diffuser has the advantage of softening the light and reducing the shadows.

Advantages:

Indirect lighting provides harmonious and homogeneous lighting throughout the room. There is no risk of being in direct contact with the light source.

Conclusion: two lights to meet all needs

Direct lighting is recommended for:

  • ·         working areas (reading, writing, cooking ...) and circulation (stairs, corridors ...)
  • ·         decoration (lighting of frames, facades ...)
  • ·         get maximum efficiency

Indirect lighting is recommended for:

  • ·         illuminate a large area with soft light
  • ·         create the basic lighting of all the rooms
  • ·         soften the light
